International Education Week (November 14th -18th, 2016) is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. This joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education is part of our efforts to promote programs that prepare all students for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States.

Global Citizen Challenge– An International Adventure through South Seattle College

11:00AM – 2:00PM, JMB/CIE – Snacks & prizes provided in the CIE

Starting in JMB (inside near bookstore, or outside of building), sign up alone or in pairs to complete a series of challenges that will take you to different departments around South, completing challenges along the way. Snacks offered in the CIE, and prizes for all who complete the challenge!

Film Screening: Wadjda (the first major film release from Saudi Arabia)

Join us for light refreshments as we watch the first major motion picture released from Saudi Arabia. Wadjda is the first feature film shot entirely in Saudi Arabia and the first feature-length film made by a female Saudi director. Winning numerous awards at film festivals around the world, the film was also selected as the Saudi Arabian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 86th Academy Awards.

Film description: An enterprising Saudi girl signs on for her school's Koran recitation competition as a way to raise the remaining funds she needs in order to buy the green bicycle that has captured her interest. Watch the trailer here.

Student Panel

Students share common experiences living in the United States after growing up in a variety of countries in the Middle East and North Africa. Learn about the varying experiences of international students, as well as first generation immigrants from these diverse regions.

The Center for International Education invites South students, staff, and faculty to participate in our 2016 International Education Week Photo Contest! Do you have photos that celebrate culture, your home country, or from an experience abroad? Submit photos and they could be selected to be on display at South! You may enter one photo per category. Winning photos will be displayed at events, in publications, in promotional materials, and on campus.

    Eligibility - Students, staff, or faculty at South Seattle College

    Photos - Photos must be the original work of the participant. You may enter only one photo per category. Panoramic photos will not be accepted. Submit all photos electronically in JPEG format. Winning photos will be enlarged so please consider the resolution and ratio of your photo. High resolution and 3:4 photos are recommended.

    Judging & Prizes - Photos will be judged by a panel of students and professional staff on the criteria of creativity, originality, photo quality and artistic expression. Winning photos will be announced November 18th. Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in all categories.
